Hey, I’m Gemma — Writer, Creator & Mum in the New Forest

Living in the heart of the New Forest National Park, I share my journey of raising children close to nature, caring for myself along the way, and discovering little joys in everyday life.
My writing journey began over ten years ago when I was pregnant with my first child—and, in true “why not?” fashion, I decided to take on a degree in Humanities and Creative Writing at the same time. It took me a decade (turns out babies aren’t the best study buddies), but I did it. That degree didn’t just give me a qualification—it sparked a love for storytelling, inspired me to encourage my children to read, and gave me the courage to create this blog.

For me, this space isn’t only for sharing with whoever happens to stumble across it—it’s also a living journal my children can one day return to, a record of our adventures, mishaps, and little lessons they might just laugh at (or roll their eyes at) in years to come.
Before family life rooted me here, I spent years working and travelling abroad, collecting stamps in my passport and stories in my pocket. I’ve always been high-spirited, determined, and full of wanderlust—qualities that now fuel the way I explore the world with my children and encourage them to grow curious, brave, and open-hearted.

I’m also a little quirky (in the best possible way)—the sort of person who finds joy in the unexpected, laughs at my own jokes, and happily embraces life’s imperfections.
Luckily, my partner not only puts up with this but also shares my passions for nature, adventure, and creativity. Together, we’ve become pretty good at swapping patience for humour when parenting throws us curveballs (which is daily, if not hourly).

Along the way, I’ve discovered tools, tips, and products that have made family life outdoors easier, more fun, and occasionally less muddy. I love sharing these with other parents—because if something has helped me wrangle two children through a forest walk without losing my mind, there’s a good chance it might help you too.

And then there’s self-care—something I’ve learned is not a luxury but a vital part of parenting (and survival). For me, that means yoga to stretch out the stresses of the day, time in nature to restore my sanity, hot baths when I need comfort, ice baths when I need a wake-up call, saunas when I want to escape, and skincare because, let’s face it, parenting leaves its mark. These little rituals keep me grounded, topped up, and (mostly) human, so I can show up as the best version of myself for my children and my family.

So here I am—writing honestly about motherhood, self-care, and the messy, magical adventure of raising a family with open hearts, muddy boots, and a good dose of humour.
If you choose to follow along, I’ll be sharing not only my favourite places and products but also the little hacks that help me survive (and sometimes even thrive!) in parenthood. I’ll sprinkle in the stories that make me laugh, cry, and occasionally wonder if my children might be conspiring against me. My hope is that these posts don’t just entertain you, but also give you comfort in knowing you’re not alone—and that there really is no perfect way to do parenting or motherhood.
